Description

Whipping up a classic Funnel Cake brings carnival memories rushing back with its crispy, golden strands of pure delight. Drizzle powdered sugar and watch your friends’ faces light up as they savor this sweet, nostalgic treat straight from the fairground.

Ingredients

Scale

Cake Base:

  • 1 box Golden Vanilla cake mix
  • Ingredients from back of cake mix box

Funnel Cake Components:

  • 2 tubs vanilla Cool Whip Frosting
  • Funnel Cake Ingredients (from favorite recipe or boxed mix)

Spices and Finishing Touches:

  • 3 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 1 pinch nutmeg
  • Powdered sugar

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F and generously coat two 6-inch cake pans with cooking spray. Mix the cake mix according to package instructions, then stir in 1 teaspoon of cinnamon and a pinch of nutmeg into your batter.
  2. Pour the cake batter evenly between the prepared pans. Bake for 30-35 minutes until the cakes turn golden brown and a toothpick inserted near the center comes out mostly clean.
  3. Allow the cakes to cool completely at room temperature. Once cooled, slice each cake horizontally to create four total cake rounds. Trim any domed tops for even layers.
  4. Place the first cake round on a serving plate. Protect the plate’s edges with wax paper strips to keep things tidy while frosting.
  5. Mix the vanilla Cool Whip Frosting with the remaining 2 teaspoons of cinnamon. Gently fold until thoroughly combined.
  6. Apply a generous frosting layer on the first cake round, spreading to the edges. Stack the next layer and repeat the frosting process until you have a four-layer cake.
  7. Frost the entire exterior of the cake, smoothing the surface for an even finish. Refrigerate the cake while preparing the funnel cake.
  8. Prepare the funnel cake following your preferred recipe or mix instructions. Let it cool slightly on a paper towel-lined plate.
  9. Carefully place the warm funnel cake on top of the frosted cake. Dust generously with powdered sugar just before serving.
  10. Consume the cake on the same day for optimal texture, as the funnel cake topping will soften over time.

Notes

  • When slicing cake layers, use a long serrated knife and rotate the cake slowly for even, clean cuts.
  • Chill the cake before adding funnel cake topping to help frosting set and prevent sliding.
  • For a gluten-free version, swap standard cake mix for a gluten-free alternative and ensure your funnel cake mix is also gluten-free.
  • Work quickly when assembling the cake layers to keep the frosting smooth and prevent it from warming up too much.
